During 1836, Washington-on-the-Brazos, Harrisburg, Galveston, Velasco, and Columbia served as temporary capitals before moving to Houston in 1837. Originally called Waterloo, Austin was renamed for the Father of Texas. A joint congressional commission first decided Austin should be Texas' capital in 1839. The Texas capitol building is 313 feet (95 meters) tall and is made of pink granite.
